Explore the Tour of Kyiv’s bridges across the river Dnieper what will bring you to all 8 (eight) of them and give you a chance to visit old part of Kyiv Podil and new residential areas of Kyiv such as Obolon, Troeschina, Darnitsa and Osokorky. All of them were built on deposited land soil in place of meadows. You will know the history of all of them.

Before mid 19th century Kyiv had ferries competing for passengers. The first permanent bridge over the Dnieper was built thanks to England. It was designed and constructed by English engineer and its metal elements were manufactured in England. The granite for the bridge was local and some of it was used for the base of the statue of Bogdan Khmelnitskiy in front of St. Sophia’s Cathedral. The 19th centuries chain bridge was destroyed twice in 1920 and 1941 and is no more existing. Numerous photos and paintings show its lovely look.

Two railway bridges over the Dnieper were very much damaged in 1941. They are rebuilt in their original look. The railway bridge built in 1870 used to the second bridge over the Dnieper in Ukraine at that time. The Podil railway bridge was started personally by the Dowager Empress Maria Fedorovna. Her Majesty preferred to live in Kyiv in 1915-17 not in St. Petersburg mostly due to Rasputin. In 1915 she attended the ceremony in the middle of the river and dropped the first stone to the water to start the construction of the bridge. Although the Podil railway bridge was put into operation in 1929.

Our tour of Kyiv bridge will bring you to Northen automobile bridge in the North of Kyiv. The bridge was opened on December 3, 1976 designed by Dorovolsky and Furs. It connects the right bank of the city with Troeshchina district, Radujnuy district and Voskresenka district. It is 816 meters long and 31 meters wide over the Dnieper and 732 meters long over the Desenka river. The Northen bridge is suspended from some 500 steel ropes. It’s pylon is 115 meters tall and its decoration is the Soviet-time emblem of Kyiv-chestnut’s blower.
